What is a Formulary?
A drug formulary is a list of prescription drugs covered by your medical plan. Most prescription drug formularies separate the medications they cover into four drug categories, or “tiers.” These groupings range from the least expensive to the most expensive cost to you. “Preferred Brand” drugs generally cost you less than “Non-Preferred Brand” drugs.
Get the Most from Your Coverage
To get the most out of your prescription drug coverage, note where your prescriptions fall within your plan’s drug formulary tiers and ask your doctor for advice. Generic drugs are usually the lowest-cost option. Generics are required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to perform the same as brand-name drug equivalents.
You can use the drug lookup tool to check medication coverage: myuhc.com or call Member Services at 1-866-414-1959.
